ON THE PALETTE

Rowena's Design and Illustration Portfolio

Some of my school design Projects

2008(New to Old)

Project: Cultural Event Poster

Date: Apr 2008

About the work: Being recognized for the unity of dancers and modernity, I tried to keep the design graphic, and just use colors and rhythms to express the energy flow there. I played with perspective but did not follow it, and pulled the space closer as the figures marched forward, so literally, it does not only show the dynamics, but also follow the title "RIVERdance" by creating ripple shapes.

2007(Old to New)

Project: Creative Typography

Date: Sep 2007

Guidelines: Use any materials to express the meaning of the given word

                 Photographed

About the work: well...Nothing really to say, medium is the message I guess...I used a lot of markers to construct the letters, and printed essays highlighted by markers. It is a fun project. The image seems really small because of the width.

Project: Package and Logo Design

Date: Sep-Oct 2007

Guidelines: Must choose a plant and derive its shape to create a logo.

Choose a cosmetic product to develop the design

Only two colors are allowed for the product

The package must show the product's name and the logo, no other graphic

                 elements could be used

The giftwrapping paper follow the same rule, except that name does not

have to be shown, and logo could be broken down to construct patterns

About the work: The logo is a lady's slipper, and it is a package for bathing lotion...

Project: Initial Roman

Date: Oct 2007

Guidelines: 16 by 16 inch squares, only choose 1 font from Roman family.

1 black and white, 1 color

choose a letter of your first or last name initials.

at least 75% of that initial letters has to appear

Find a word start with that initial, between 4-5 letters. The design of initial letter itself has to reflect

meaning of that word, and has to work without showing the word.

Subject: Raise

Fonts Chosen: Times new Roman

About the work: I tried diffrent versions of raise, some are more dynamic and energetic, but in the end I go with this version and color combination to reflect the nature of the font.

Project: Gothic Madness Narratives

Date: Oct-Nov 2007

Guidelines: 1 panel black and white, one with color.

Choose 3 words out of 4 from the list in each row provided, only use 2

                 sans serif fonts.

No exchange between words in rows.

Subject: b & w-----aspire, yawn, boring

             color-----exasperate, whisper, assert

fonts chosen: color-----Futura, Franklin Gothic Heavy

                     b & w-----Stone Sans, Frutiger Heavy

About the work: There are lots of comparison in characteristics of each word to show diffrent attitude and relationships.

Project: Bird Relief Paper Panel

Date: Nov 2007

Guidelines: Only use paper to construct the panel

                 3 inch maximun in depth

Derive from a bird and place it within the panel, redesign the form and

composition, but still keep the characteristics of the bird

Subject: White Pelican

About the work: I put emphasis on the weight and form of pelican's mouth, design a variety of textures.

Project: Type Poster

Date: Dec 2007

Guidelines: choose 1 font, design a color poster and only use that font to promote that typographer's exhibition

Must reflect the nature of the type or typographer or the era.

Must show the typographer's name, the name of the type and "retrospective exhibition", " Februaty 1

to March 30, 2008, triangle gallery, Calgary"

Subject: The Swiss Helvetica

About the work: Helvetica was designed in 1957 by Max Miedinger with Eduard Hoffman in Haas Company, Switzerland. It was initially named Neue Haas Grotesk that could compete Akzidenz Grotesk in Swiss market. In 1970 they changed the name to Helvetica, which means Switzerland in Latin, to be marketable internationally. I derived the Swiss Flag Cross pattern and color into my design and made the compostition assymetrical, to reflect the style of design during 1950-1970.
